ABSTRACT

Water use was impacted significantly by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although previous studies quantitatively investigated the effects of COVID-19 on water use, the relationship between water-use variation and COVID-19 dynamics (i.e., the spatial-temporal characteristics of COVID-19 cases) has received less attention. This study developed a two-step methodology to unravel the impact of COVID-19 pandemic dynamics on water-use variation. First, using a water-use prediction model, the water-use change percentage (WUCP) indicator, which was calculated as the relative difference between modeled and observed water use, i.e., water-use variation, was used to quantify the COVID-19 effects on water use. Second, two indicators, i.e., the number of existing confirmed cases (NECC) and the spatial risk index (SRI), were applied to characterize pandemic dynamics, and the quantitative relationship between WUCP and pandemic dynamics was examined by means of regression analysis. We collected and analyzed 6-year commercial water-use data from smart meters of Zhongshan District in Dalian City, Northeast China. The results indicate that commercial water use decreased significantly, with an average WUCP of 59.4%, 54.4%, and 45.7%during the three pandemic waves, respectively, in Dalian. Regression analysis showed that there was a positive linear relationship between water-use changes (i.e., WUCP) and pandemic dynamics (i.e., NECC and SRI). Both the number of COVID-19 cases and their spatial distribution impacted commercial water use, and the effects were weakened by restriction strategy improvement, and the accumulation of experience and knowledge about COVID-19. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the impact of COVID-19 dynamics on commercial water use. The results can be used to help predict water demand under during future pandemic periods or other types of natural and human-made disturbance.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Vaccination rates for the COVID-19 vaccine have recently been stagnant worldwide. We aim to analyze the potential patterns of vaccination development from the first three doses to reveal the possible trends of the next round of vaccination and further explore the factors influencing vaccination in the selected populations. Methods: On July 2022, a stratified multistage random sampling method in the survey was conducted to select 6,781 people from 4 provinces China, who were above the age of 18 years. Participants were divided into two groups based on whether they had a chronic disease. The data were run through Cochran-Armitage trend test and multivariable regression analyses. Results: A total of 957 participants with chronic disease and 5,454 participants without chronic disease were included in this survey. Vaccination rates for the first, second and booster doses in chronic disease population were93.70% (95% CI: 92.19-95.27%), 91.12% (95%CI: 94.43-95.59%), and 83.18% (95%CI: 80.80-85.55%) respectively. By contrast, the first, second and booster vaccination rates for the general population were 98.02% (95% CI: 97.65-98.39%), 95.01% (95% CI: 94.43-95.59%) and 85.06% (95% CI: 84.11-86.00%) respectively. The widening gap in vaccination rates was observed as the number of vaccinations increases. Higher self-efficacy was a significant factor in promoting vaccination, which has been observed in all doses of vaccines. Higher education level, middle level physical activity and higher public prevention measures play a positive role in vaccination among the general population, while alcohol consumption acts as a significant positive factor in the chronic disease population (p < 0.05). Conclusion: As the number of vaccinations increases, the trend of decreasing vaccination rate is becoming more pronounced. In future regular vaccinations, we may face low vaccination rates as the increasing number of infections and the fatigue associated with the prolonged outbreak hamper vaccination. Measures need to be found to counter this downward trend such as improving the self-efficacy of the population.

ABSTRACT

In an increasingly complex and uncertain decision-making environment, large-scale group decision-making (LSGDM) can offer a more efficient method, allowing a large number of decision-makers (DMs) to truly participate in the decision-making process. The consensus-reaching process (CRP) is an effective method for resolving conflicting opinions among large-scale DMs. However, in the existing CRP of LSGDM, the new consensus state and the adjustment cost borne by inconsistent DMs after implementing feedback suggestions are not taken into consideration. To address this issue, this paper proposes a global optimization feedback model with particle swarm optimization (PSO) for LSGDM in hesitant fuzzy linguistic environments. An improved density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) on hesitant fuzzy linguistic term sets (HFLTSs) is introduced to classify large-scale DMs into several clusters, and a weight determination method that combines cluster size and intra-cluster tightness is also presented. The consensus degree of clusters is calculated at two levels: intra-consensus and inter-consensus. To improve the global consensus level with minimum cost, a global optimization feedback model is established to generate recommendation advice for inconsistent DMs, and the model is solved by PSO. A numerical example related to "COVID-19” and some comparisons are provided to verify the feasibility and advantages of the proposed method.

BACKGROUND: Optimal Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination coverage is necessary to achieve community protection, and self-efficacy independently predict vaccination behavior. The current study examined the effect of self-perception on COVID-19 vaccination self-efficacy as well as potential mechanisms among Chinese adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from four cities in China (n = 6781). Models 4 and 8 in Hayes' PROCESS macro were used to test models. RESULTS: Self-perception (ß = 0.128, 95 % CI: 0.093, 0.163) and self-perception ∗ mental health (ß = 0.009, 95 % CI: 0.003, 0.014) were positively associated with trust in doctors and vaccine developers, while mental health was negatively related to trust in doctors and vaccine developers (ß = -0.483, 95 % CI: -0.629, -0.337). Self-perception (ß = 0.149, 95 % CI: 0.138, 0.161), trust in doctors and vaccine developers (ß = 0.185, 95 % CI: 0.177, 0.194) and self-perception ∗ mental health (ß = 0.003, 95 % CI: 0.002, 0.005) were positively associated with COVID-19 vaccination self-efficacy. Mental health was negatively related to COVID-19 vaccination self-efficacy (ß = -0.101, 95 % CI: -0.151, -0.051). LIMITATIONS: This cross-sectional study collected data through online questionnaires. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that the relationship between self-perception and COVID-19 vaccination self-efficacy was partially mediated by trust in doctors and vaccine developers. Both the correlation between self-perception and COVID-19 vaccination self-efficacy, and the relationship between self-perception and trust in doctors and vaccine developers were moderated by mental health. Findings confirm that increasing COVID-19 vaccination self-efficacy would be facilitated by improvements in self-perception, mental health, and trust in doctors and vaccine developers.

ABSTRACT

How does SARS-CoV-2 cause lung microenvironment disturbance and inflammatory storm is still obscure. We here performed the single-cell transcriptome sequencing from lung, blood, and bone marrow of two dead COVID-19 patients and detected the cellular communication among them. Our results demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 infection increase the frequency of cellular communication between alveolar type I cells (AT1) or alveolar type II cells (AT2) and myeloid cells triggering immune activation and inflammation microenvironment and then induce the disorder of fibroblasts, club, and ciliated cells, which may cause increased pulmonary fibrosis and mucus accumulation. Further study showed that the increase of T cells in the lungs may be mainly recruited by myeloid cells through ligands/receptors (e.g., ANXA1/FPR1, C5AR1/RPS19, and CCL5/CCR1). Interestingly, we also found that certain ligands/receptors (e.g., ANXA1/FPR1, CD74/COPA, CXCLs/CXCRs, ALOX5/ALOX5AP, CCL5/CCR1) are significantly activated and shared among lungs, blood and bone marrow of COVID-19 patients, implying that the dysregulation of ligands/receptors may lead to immune cell's activation, migration, and the inflammatory storm in different tissues of COVID-19 patients. Collectively, our study revealed a possible mechanism by which the disorder of cell communication caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection results in the lung inflammatory microenvironment and systemic immune responses across tissues in COVID-19 patients.

ABSTRACT

Critical patients and intensive care unit (ICU) patients are the main population of COVID-19 deaths. Therefore, establishing a reliable method is necessary for COVID-19 patients to distinguish patients who may have critical symptoms from other patients. In this retrospective study, we firstly evaluated the effects of 54 laboratory indicators on critical illness and death in 3044 COVID-19 patients from the Huoshenshan hospital in Wuhan, China. Secondly, we identify the eight most important prognostic indicators (neutrophil percentage, procalcitonin, neutrophil absolute value, C-reactive protein, albumin, interleukin-6, lymphocyte absolute value and myoglobin) by using the random forest algorithm, and find that dynamic changes of the eight prognostic indicators present significantly distinct within differently clinical severities. Thirdly, our study reveals that a model containing age and these eight prognostic indicators can accurately predict which patients may develop serious illness or death. Fourthly, our results demonstrate that different genders have different critical illness rates compared with different ages, in particular the mortality is more likely to be attributed to some key genes (e.g. ACE2, TMPRSS2 and FURIN) by combining the analysis of public lung single cells and bulk transcriptome data. Taken together, we urge that the prognostic model and first-hand clinical trial data generated in this study have important clinical practical significance for predicting and exploring the disease progression of COVID-19 patients.

BACKGROUND: The new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is raging worldwide. The administered vaccination has become a significant vehicle against the virus. Three hypotheses were made and required for validation: the number of vaccines administered is related to the country gross domestic product (GDP), vaccines can reduce the fatality rate (FR), and dashboards can present more meaningful information than traditionally static visualizations. Research data were downloaded from the GitHub website. The aims of this study are to verify that the number of vaccination uptakes is related to the country GDP, that vaccines can reduce FR, and that dashboards can provide more meaningful information than traditionally static visualizations. METHODS: The COVID-19 cumulative number of confirmed cases (CNCCs) and deaths were downloaded from the GitHub website for countries/regions on November 6, 2021. Four variables between January 1, 2021, and November 6, 2021, were collected, including CNCCs and deaths, GDP per capita, and vaccine doses administered per 100 people (VD100) in countries/regions. We applied the Kano model, forest plot, and choropleth map to demonstrate and verify the 3 hypotheses using correlation coefficients (CC) between vaccination and FRs. Dashboards used to display the vaccination effects were on Google Maps. RESULTS: We observed that the higher the GDP, the more vaccines are administered (Association = 0.68, t = 13.14, P < .001) in countries, the FR can be reduced by administering vaccinations that are proven except for the 4 groups of Asia, Low income, Lower middle income, and South America, as well as the application (app) with dashboard-type choropleth map can be used to show the comparison of vaccination rates for countries/regions using line charts. CONCLUSION: This research uses the Kano map, forest plot, and choropleth map to verify the 3 hypotheses and provides insights into the vaccination effect against the FR for relevant epidemic studies in the future.

ABSTRACT

RATIONALE: Although urban-rural residency has been shown to influence individual COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy, the differences between urban and rural China have yet to be uncovered. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the current prevalence and factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in urban and rural areas and explore whether the rural versus urban residency is associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. METHODS: A national, cross-sectional, online survey among Chinese urban and rural adults (≥18 years old) was conducted from 6th to August 9, 2021. A questionnaire was used to collect data on sociodemographic factors, perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccination status. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to identify the factors that influence COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to explore the association between urban versus rural residency and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. RESULTS: In total, 29,925 participants (80.56% urban participants) were recruited. Urban participants had a higher COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy than their rural counterparts (9.39% vs. 4.26%). After adjusting for potential confounders, we found that COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among females was lower than that in males in both urban (aOR = 0.78, 95% CI [0.69-0.88]) and rural areas (aOR = 0.54, 95% CI [0.39-0.75]). The lack of trust towards vaccine producers was found to be associated with vaccine hesitancy among the urban participants (aOR = 2.76, 95% CI [2.22-3.43]). The rural floating population had a lower COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy than the rural permanent residents (aOR = 0.58, 95% CI [0.42-0.80]). PSM analysis revealed a 2.38% difference in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy between urban and rural participants. CONCLUSIONS: Urban participants were more hesitant to receive the COVID-19 vaccine than rural participants. Priority should be placed on boosting confidence in the healthcare system to reduce COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among urban residents. Furthermore, we advocate for extra incentives and vaccination education for rural permanent residents.

ABSTRACT

Given the possibility that food contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 might become an infection source, there is an urgent need for us to develop a rapid and accurate nucleic acid detection method for SARS-CoV-2 in food to ensure food safety. Here, we propose a sensitive, specific, and reliable molecular detection method for SARS-CoV-2. It has a mechanism to control amplicon contamination. Swabs from spiked frozen shrimps were used as detection samples, which were processed by heating at 95 °C for 30 s. These preprocessed samples served as the templates for subsequent amplification. A colorimetric LAMP reaction was carried out to amplify both the SARS-CoV-2 target and the MS2 phage simultaneously in one tube. MS2 phage was detected by colorimetric LAMP as the internal control, while SARS-CoV-2 was detected with a CRISPR/Cas12a system. The fluorescence results could be visually detected with an ultraviolet lamp. Meanwhile, uracil was incorporated during the LAMP reaction to provide an amplicon contamination proof mechanism. This test could detect as low as 20 copies of SARS-CoV-2 in one reaction. Additionally, the detection could be finished in 45 min. The test only needs a heating block and an ultraviolet lamp, which shows the potential for field detection.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory disorder caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which had rapidly spread all over the world and caused public health emergencies in the past two years. Although the diagnosis and treatment for COVID-19 have been well defined, the immune cell characteristics and the key lymphocytes subset alterations in COVID-19 patients have not been thoroughly investigated. METHODS: The levels of immune cells including T cells, B cells, and natural killer (NK) cells in 548 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, and 30 types of lymphocyte subsets in 125 hospitalized COVID-19 patients admitted to Wuhan Huoshenshan Hospital of China were measured using flow cytometry. The relationship between lymphocytes subsets with the cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the characteristics of lymphocyte subsets in single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data obtained from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were also analysed in COVID-19 patients. RESULTS: In this study, we found that patients with critical COVID-19 infection exhibited an overall decline in lymphocytes including CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, total T cells, B cells, and NK cells compared to mild and severe patients. However, the number of lymphocyte subsets, such as CD21low CD38low B cells, effector T4 cells, and PD1+ depleted T8 cells, was moderately increased in critical COVID-19 patients compared to mild cases. Notably, except for effector memory T4 cells, plasma blasts and Tregs, the number of all lymphocyte subsets was markedly decreased in COVID-19 patients with IL-6 levels over 30-fold higher than those in healthy cases. Moreover, scRNA-seq data showed obvious differences in the distribution and numbers of lymphocyte subsets between COVID-19 patients and healthy persons, and subsets-specific marker genes of lymphocyte subsets including CD4, CD19, CCR7, and IL7R, were markedly decreased in COVID-19 patients compared with those in healthy cases. CONCLUSION: A comprehensive decrease in immune cell and lymphocyte subsets in critical COVID-19 patients, and peripheral lymphocyte subset alterations showed a clear association with clinical characteristics.

SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant infection generally gives rise to asymptomatic to moderate COVID-19 in vaccinated people. The immune cells can be reprogrammed or "imprinted" by vaccination and infections to generate protective immunity against subsequent challenges. Considering the immune imprint in Omicron infection is unclear, here we delineate the innate immune landscape of human Omicron infection via single-cell RNA sequencing, surface proteome profiling, and plasma cytokine quantification. We found that monocyte responses predominated in immune imprints of Omicron convalescents, with IL-1ß-associated and interferon (IFN)-responsive signatures with mild and moderate symptoms, respectively. Low-density neutrophils increased and exhibited IL-1ß-associated and IFN-responsive signatures similarly. Mild convalescents had increased blood IL-1ß, CCL4, IL-9 levels and PI3+ neutrophils, indicating a bias to IL-1ß responsiveness, while moderate convalescents had increased blood CXCL10 and IFN-responsive monocytes, suggesting durative IFN responses. Therefore, IL-1ß- or IFN-responsiveness of myeloid cells may indicate the disease severity of Omicron infection and mediate post-COVID conditions.

Objective: To assess lifestyles, COVID-19 vaccination coverage rates, and the relationships between lifestyles and COVID-19 vaccination among Chinese population. Methods: We collected data on sociodemographics, perception of the COVID-19 pandemic, lifestyles, and self-reported COVID-19 vaccination via an online survey in China. The chi-square goodness-of-fit test was used to monitor sample saturation throughout the formal online survey. The binary logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine the association between COVID-19 vaccination rate and lifestyle score. We assigned values to 12 lifestyles ranging from positive to negative, with positive lifestyles receiving a higher score and negative lifestyles receiving a lower score, ranging from 1 to 5. For each participant, the total lifestyle scored from 12 to 56. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to visualize the trends and correlations between lifestyle score and COVID-19 vaccination coverage. Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to explore the association between specific lifestyles and COVID-19 vaccination. Results: A total of 29,925 participants (51.4% females) responded. The lifestyle score of the sample was 44.60 ± 6.13 (scoring range: 12-56). COVID-19 vaccination rate was found to be 89.4% (89.1-89.8%). Female participants reported a higher vaccination rate than male participants (91.5 vs. 87.1%). Compared to Q1, COVID-19 vaccination coverage rates increased with lifestyle total scores [OR Q2 = 1.901 (1.718-2.103), P < 0.001; OR Q3 = 2.373 (2.099-2.684), P < 0.001; and OR Q4 = 3.765 (3.209-4.417), P < 0.001]. After applying PSM, it was determined that all the 12 specific healthy lifestyles analyzed, including maintaining a healthy body weight, a healthy diet, regular physical exercises, adequate sleep, regular physical examination, and others, were found to be positive factors for COVID-19 vaccination. Conclusion: The majority of mainland Chinese lived a healthy lifestyle throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rate of COVID-19 vaccination was high. Specific healthy lifestyles contributed to COVID-19 vaccination coverage rates significantly. According to the study's findings, global efforts to achieve herd immunity should be prioritized by continually promoting healthy lifestyles and improving public perception of COVID-19 vaccines.

ABSTRACT

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Emerging evidence indicates that the NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is activated, which results in a cytokine storm at the late stage of COVID-19. Autophagy regulation is involved in the infection and replication of SARS-CoV-2 at the early stage and the inhibition of NLRP3 inflammasome-mediated lung inflammation at the late stage of COVID-19. Here, we discuss the autophagy regulation at different stages of COVID-19. Specifically, we highlight the therapeutic potential of autophagy activators in COVID-19 by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome, thereby avoiding the cytokine storm. We hope this review provides enlightenment for the use of autophagy activators targeting the inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome, specifically the combinational therapy of autophagy modulators with the inhibitors of the NLRP3 inflammasome, antiviral drugs, or anti-inflammatory drugs in the fight against COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: China is beginning to transform from a migrant exporting country to a migrant importing country. Our study aimed to assess risks of imported tuberculosis among travellers and to determine risk factors, to tailor institutional guidelines. METHODS: We conducted an observational, retrospective, population-based cohort study. Molecular epidemiology surveillance methods were used to screen travellers for cases of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) at Guangzhou Port in China from January 2010 to December 2016. RESULTS: A total of 165,369 travellers from 190 countries and regions were screened for PTB. The rate of suspected PTB, laboratory confirmed rate, and the total detection rate in emigrants were significantly higher than those in travellers (p<0.01). There were four differences in the PTB screening process between emigrants and travellers. According to the transmission risk degree of the tuberculosis, forty high-risk PTB importing countries were divided into five levels. The travellers diagnosed with PTB were significantly younger than the emigrants (p<0.01). The distribution of genotypes differed significantly between the travellers and emigrants (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: PTB screening process in travellers at ports should include a risk assessment of high-risk groups. It should reduce diagnosis time by rapid molecular detection methods and strengthen drug resistant (DR) transmission and monitoring of imported PTB strains through molecular genotyping at ports.

ABSTRACT

The coronavirus pandemic is forcing societal changes, even along the trajectories of international tourism, educational development, and training systems. Existing research has demonstrated that scholastic attainment, parental educational expectations, and school type have significant impacts on the self-educational expectations of migrant children. Nevertheless, there is still insufficient research on the differences in subject grades, parental educational expectations when it comes to choices regarding specific learning phases, and the impact of school types on specific learning phases. Taking 'self-educational expectations = high school degree and below';as the control group, we selected the data of migrant children in grade nine from the China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) and employed multinomial logistic regression (MLR) to investigate the factors affecting the self-educational expectations of China's migrant children. The results showed that the standardized scores of Chinese children and the math scores of migrant children only have a significant positive impact on their self-educational expectations for either a doctoral degree or master's degree and a bachelor's degree, respectively. Parental educational expectations will greatly facilitate the self-educational expectations of children when these are generally consistent with the type of choice of their children's self-educational expectations. School type only plays a part when the self-educational expectations of migrant children are to attain a bachelor's degree. The results can help us understand the differences in the educational expectations of parents and their children;guide parents to positively view their children's scholastic attainment, emotions, and development goals;and help schools fairly allocate high-quality educational resources in promoting the integration of students from different backgrounds.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between lifestyle and COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among Chinese adults and provide recommendations for increasing vaccination rates. METHODS: From August 6, 2021 to August 9, 2021, we recruited 29,925 participants from 31 Chinese provinces via an online questionnaire. We designed a question to assess COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and used 16 items to assess lifestyle by calculating lifestyle scores. Odds ratios (OR) with 95 % confidence intervals (CI) were used to estimate the association by using binary logistic regression models. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy was 8.40 % (95 % CI: 8.09-8.72), and the median lifestyle score was 65.00 (interquartile range: 59.00-71.00). After adjusting for potential confounders, the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy rate decreased significantly with an increase in lifestyle score (P for Trend <0.001). Low COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy rate was associated with lifestyle factors including adequate sleep, never smoking, intermittent drinking, good relationships, working and studying, using hand sanitizer, wearing masks, less gathering activities, and keeping social distance (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that high lifestyle score is associated with low vaccine hesitancy rate among Chinese. The government should view the smokers (or the drinkers) as the key to further boosting the vaccination rate. In addition, the publicity and education about wearing masks and keeping social distance should be prioritized.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the psychological experience of COVID-19 basic vaccination, the willingness to receive booster vaccines, and to determine their relationships among Chinese people. Between 6 August 2021 and 9 August 2021, a research firm performed a national cross-sectional online survey among Chinese individuals (aged over 18), using the snowball sampling approach, with 26,755 participants. Factor analysis and binary logistic regression were used to evaluate the existing associations. The overall COVID-19 vaccination psychological experience score of the participants was 25.83 (25.78~25.89; scores ranged from 7-35). A total of 93.83% (95%CI = 93.54~94.12) of respondents indicated a willingness to receive booster vaccines. After classifying psychological experiences associated with COVID-19 vaccination into positive and negative experiences and adjusting for confounding factors, for the former, the willingness to receive booster vaccines for participants with the highest scores of 13-15 was 3.933 times higher (OR = 3.933, 95%CI = 3.176~4.871) than participants who obtained scores of 3-9, and for the latter, the willingness to receive booster vaccines for participants with the highest scores of 19-20 was 8.871 times higher (OR = 8.871, 95%CI = 6.240~12.612) than participants who obtained scores of 4-13. Our study suggests that a good psychological experience with vaccination is positively associated with an increased willingness to receive booster vaccines.

ABSTRACT

Although numerous COVID-19 vaccines are effective against COVID-19 infection and variants of concern (VOC) in the real world, it is imperative to obtain evidence of the corresponding vaccine effectiveness (VE). This study estimates the real-world effectiveness of the BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 vaccines against COVID-19 infection and determines the influence of different virus variants on VE by using test-negative design (TND) studies. We systematically searched for published articles on the efficacy of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 against COVID-19 infection. Two researchers independently selected and extracted data from eligible studies. We calculated the VE associated with different vaccine types, SARS-CoV-2 variants, and vaccination statuses, using an inverse variance random-effects model. We selected 19 eligible studies in the meta-analysis from 1651 records. For the partially vaccinated group, the VE of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 was 61% and 78% against COVID-19 infection, respectively. For the completely vaccinated group, the VE of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 was 90% and 92% against COVID-19 infection, respectively. During subgroup analyses, the overall VE of BNT162b2 and mRNA-1273 against the Delta variant was 53% and 71%, respectively, for the partially vaccinated group; the respective VE values were 85% and 91% for the fully vaccinated group. Irrespective of the BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273 vaccines, the Delta variant significantly weakened vaccine protection for the partially vaccinated group, while full vaccination was highly effective against COVID-19 infection and various VOC. The mRNA-1273 vaccine is more effective against COVID-19 infection and VOC than the BNT162b2 vaccine, especially for the partially vaccinated group. Overall, the results provide recommendations for national and regional vaccine policies.
